The change of clothes seemed to improve Cinnamon’s mood.  She’d ditched the Daisy Dukes for a pair of jeans, and draped a white Oxford shirt over the sports bra.  The truckstop whore had disappeared.  Mike noticed right away she’d visibly relaxed, ignoring the barbecue buffet’s Confederate motif.  She still glared at Stan before dropping her bag in the booth and going for food.

Mike poked his fork into his pulled chicken, which he’d doused in some sort of sweet sauce.  “You really could have picked a better place to eat.”

Stan swallowed half his Pepsi, washing down the huge mouthful of hot sauce-laced pork.  He pounded on his chest as it went down.  “What’s the problem?  We’re in the South.”

“Stan, how do you think someone like Cinnamon did down here during the war?”

“The war’s over, man.  Besides, this place has a lot of character.”

Mike rolled his eyes.  “You always were hopeless.”

Cinnamon returned with a salad and a little bit of pulled pork.  “Who’s hopeless?”

“This guy,” said Mike.  “I don’t think he gets why you find the place offensive.”

“Well, I’m sure it has a lot of character.”

“See?” said Stan.

“But you might want to think twice,” said Cinnamon, “before bringing a black woman here next time.” (continue reading…)

Franco poured out a little coke across the girl’s naked rump and admired how the white powder stood out against her sun-bronzed skin.

“Be careful now,” he said, himself naked.

“Save some for me,” she said.

“I will, miel.  I will.”  He took his American Express Platinum and pushed the powder around into a line.

“That tickles!” she said.

“Hold still, then.  It’s really going to tickle in a second.”  Taking a hundred-dollar bill he’d rolled, he stuck one end up his nose and quickly sniffed the powder off the girl’s ass.  He enjoyed the sudden jolt coupled with the way she writhed from being tickled.

She squealed, giggled, and rolled over.  “Let me do it to you.” (continue reading…)

“Go home, Carlo,” said Kennedy.  She stood in the doorway of Estevez’s office at the Justice Center.  “The Chest is obviously not in Cleveland anymore.  Let our people take it from here.”

Estevez rubbed his eyes, wanting desperately to take Kennedy’s advice.  “I wish it were that simple, Terri.”

“What’s not simple?  You have a suspected organized crime figure committing grand larceny and shipping the swag over state lines in a subtly stolen car.”

That drew a laugh from Estevez.  “I like that.  ‘Subtly stolen.’  I’ll have to remember that one.”

Kennedy returned the laugh as she took a seat across from Estevez.  “Look, once they crossed the Ohio River with that thing, this became a federal case.”

“Like I said, it’s not that simple.” (continue reading…)

Chapter 16

In Columbia, South Carolina, Sharon almost didn’t pull into the restaurant Stan had picked out.  Below the American flag out front flew a Confederate battle flag.  Sharon bristled.

“What?” said Stan.

Sitting in the center lane with the left turn signal on, Sharon fumed.  “You want me to eat there?”

“Yeah.  You’ll love it.  They have the best pulled pork in the south.”

“Stan, do you see that flag flying under the American flag?”

“Yeah.  We’re in the south.  They do that a lot.”

“Do you see why I’m a little reluctant to eat there?”

“Hey, the war ended a hundred and forty years ago.  Nothing they can do about it now.” (continue reading…)
